The INOV.AM Agenda – Innovation in Additive Manufacturing – was created to stimulate and innovate the Portuguese industry both scientifically and technologically, aiming to enhance Portugal’s competitiveness in the international market. INOV.AM focuses on advancing knowledge, technologies, and materials for additive manufacturing (AM), linking AM’s unique capabilities with traditional production methods to improve process efficiency, flexibility, and enable the creation of high-quality, customized products.
INOV.AM brings together 73 entities, including 61 businesses entities and 12 scientific institutions, with the goal of driving sustainable growth in Portugal’s additive manufacturing sector, positioning the country to compete internationally.
Through the development of new materials, process, advanced automation, and the training and skill development of human resources, the project aims to promote the production of customized, efficient and high-value products.
The project is structured around 8 Product, Process, and Service (PPS) families and 24 complementary Work Packages, focused on achieving INOV.AM’s innovation goals.
INOV.AM operates across key sectors such as plastics, molds and tools, construction and furniture, healthcare and food, ceramics and glass, mobility and transportation, software, and training, fostering innovation to boost Portugal’s presence in the global additive manufacturing market.
BENEFITS OF THE AGENDA
Industrial Innovation
Development of advanced technologies for additive manufacturing
Sustainability
Use of material and process that reduce environmental impact
International Competitiveness
Increase Portugal’s presence in international markets
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
• 40 new products
• 1 new training platform
• 200 new recruitments
• 55 publications
• 15 patent submissions
Among the most innovative projects currently under development are:
- Mold 5G – The production of a fully 3D-printed mold developed entirely through topological optimization. This pioneering mold is designed for producing two-component parts and is machine-independent, setting new standards in manufacturing efficiency and versatility.
- 3D Printed Food – The development of techniques to reuse food waste and create new products. The idea is to use fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be discarded to print food with new textures and shapes, making them more appealing, especially for children and people with specific nutritional needs.
- Recycled materials for Additive Manufacturing – The creation of new products, such as filaments or pellets, specifically for additive manufacturing, based on recycled materials. This opens up new opportunities for sustainable manufacturing;
- The INOV.AM Academy – Specialized training in additive manufacturing. Covering the entire country, with 5 educational hubs (Guimarães, Coimbra, Leiria, Marinha Grande, Oeiras) it offers rapid training to equip professionals with the skills needed to utilize AM technologies effectively.
- Digital Transformation – The development of advanced software and automation tools that will support the evolution of Portugal’s manufacturing sector into a more efficient and flexible industry.
The adoption of these technologies will drive significant gains in production efficiency, sustainability, and global competitiveness for Portugal’s industry.
Don’t just imagine the future,
be part of it.
